The Activity .

To remove scrub, mainly small birch and pines from areas of heathland.

Tools - Bow saws and loppers will be supplied.

Volunteers should wear sturdy waterproof footwear with a good grip, plus a pair of leather gardening gloves.

Risk Assessment.

Hazards from falling trees and flying wood, injury from hand tools.

Possible injury from lifting/carrying heavy weights.

Danger from slipping on wet uneven ground and tripping over tree stumps.

Precautions.

Inspect tools prior to use and report any defects to the group leader. Maintain a safe working distance between volunteers. Fell trees AWAY from people working.

Cut debris into easily manageable lengths and remove to the agreed area.

Gloves are to be worn where the material is sharp or abrasive. The heel of trees being felled can sometimes kickback, so when felling always give a verbal warning and stand well clear of the bole. Be aware at all times of uneven ground and stumps from previously cut trees.

At the end of the activity report any damage to the tools to the group leader.

Report all accidents to the group leader.

Two people hold current St John ' s Ambulance Emergency Aid qualifications,

Keith Bowden & Andrew Halstead.

A First Aid kit and mobile phone will be on site.

The nearest A&E hospital is St Peter ' s tel:01932 872000 direction towards Chertsey on the A320.

If directing an ambulance give the location as Horsell Common, Anthonys entrance, opposite Sands at the Bleak public house.

Woking Community Hospital in Heathside Road has a minor injuries unit open on Sunday between 9.00am to 10.00pm.

All gates and barriers on the Common have the same padlock and a key to open them is kept in the First Aid box.
